Ride to the Petroglyphs

We recently received a glowing testimonial from an out-of-town visitor who went on our ride to the Hohokam Petroglyphs. This trail takes riders through the beautiful, rustic Tonto National Forest to the mysterious drawings and carvings left behind centuries ago by the Hohokam Indians. Pam from Middleton, Wisconsin, writes:

“Riding horses is what I love to do, and there’s no place in Arizona I’d rather ride than Spur Cross Stables. Owner Lee Anderson is one of the finest horsemen I’ve ever met and has some of the nicest horses and guides available for public rides. Located at the entrance to Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and Tonto National Forest, the stable can take you to some of the most beautiful places on earth. I’ve taken many rides with Spur Cross Stables over the years, from one-hour rides with out-of-town friends to an all-day ride to Seven Springs high in the Tonto Forest hills.

Most recently, a friend and I took a four-hour ride to see the Petroglyphs made by Native Americans at their summer home a thousand years ago (an experience you can’t have just anywhere)! The destination is an amazing sight to see and offers mysterious insights into the lives of these ancient people. The journey to and from the Petroglyphs is as enjoyable as the destination itself, taking you through several water crossings and some of the most beautiful Sonoran Desert country accessible to humans. Our guide, Jeff, was experienced, knowledgeable and entertaining – telling some tall cowboy tales that made it challenging to distinguish fact from fiction and kept us smiling the whole way! The horses, Lady Bug (a mule actually), Echo and Sagebrush, were perfect mounts for the trip. All the horses are well cared for and well trained, making for a safe and enjoyable ride every time.

There’s something for everyone at Spur Cross Stables and I highly recommend them for your next horseback riding adventure in Cave Creek. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed and will take home some special memories to last a lifetime. When you go, be sure to allow extra time to visit with the stable residents, including donkeys Roscoe and Jake, and Gilbert the famous pot-bellied pig!”

Thanks for the lovely words, Pam, and we hope you come back to Arizona for another unforgettable ride soon!
